How to Decorate an Urli with Floating Candles for Diwali

1 min read

An urli filled with water, flowers and gently floating candles is one of the simplest ways to make your home feel festive. It takes about ten minutes, needs no special skill, and looks beautiful at the entrance, in the pooja room or at the centre of your dining table.

What you need

A wide, shallow urli or glass bowl; clean water; fresh petals such as marigold or rose; and a set of floating candles. Our Daisy Floating Candles, Rose Floating Candles and Heart Gerbera Floating Candles come in sets of four, which suits most urlis.

Step by step

1. Place the urli where it will stay - moving it later spills water and wets the wicks. 2. Fill it about three-quarters with water. 3. Scatter petals around the edge first, leaving open water in the centre. 4. Set the floating candles in the open water, spaced evenly. 5. Light them with a long lighter and keep the wicks dry while placing them.

Tips for a polished look

Mix two flower shapes for depth, keep the colour palette to two or three shades, and add a pair of diyas beside the urli for height - our Green Gel Diyas glow like glass when lit. Each floating candle burns for approximately 3-4 hours, so light them just before guests arrive.

Safety first

Never leave burning candles unattended, keep the urli away from curtains, and place it out of reach of children and pets.
