Gel Wax Diyas vs Clay Diyas: Which Should You Choose?

Clay diyas with oil and cotton wicks are the heart of Diwali. In recent years, gel wax and decorative wax diyas have become popular too. Both have their place - here is an honest comparison.

Clay diyas with oil

Traditional, inexpensive and deeply meaningful. They need oil and wicks to be prepared, can spill or leave oil marks, and need topping up through the evening.

Gel wax and wax-filled diyas

Ready to light with no oil, no spills and no preparation. Gel wax is clear and glows like coloured glass, so the diya looks beautiful even when unlit. Our Green Gel Diyas and Copper Pink Diyas are made this way, and the Peacock Tealight Holders can be relit again and again with fresh tealights.

Which should you choose?

Use clay diyas for puja and tradition, and wax or gel diyas where you want clean, mess-free decor - windowsills, dining tables, the entrance or a thali for guests. Many homes now use both.

Safety tips

Place diyas on a heat-safe surface, away from curtains and rangoli powder, and never leave them burning unattended.
